Happy John Chilembwe Day!
Today is John Chilembwe Day. Chilembwe was a Malawian minister who led the first real effort in the fight for Malawian independence. The Chilembwe Uprising, as it was called, did not last very long, but it still got Chilembwe’s picture on Malawian money. One of the most notable incidents of the uprising was the murder of David Livingstone’s grandson, who was running a plantation in Malawi. Chilembwe killed him, and then put his head on a spear at the front of the sanctuary for Sunday worship. Nice.
This day is also important enough that I don’t have to go to work :).
